Lose Fat Lying Down

How sleep deprivation makes you fat!

In a recent study, sleep-deprived subjects (those who slept 1 hour and 20 minutes less per night for one week) overate by 594 calories extra per day. All else being equal, this amount of calories would lead to 1 lb weight gain each week! You could gain over 50 pounds in one year just from skimping on sleep!

Specific hunger hormones, namely gherkin and leptin, are affected when you don’t get enough sleep.  Also, you have to eat more to boost your energy the following day to stay awake.  And since you’re awake for longer, you’re eating more.  All three of these contribute to weight gain from lack of sleep.

Bottom Line:

Burning the candle at both ends and thinking just “1 night of lack of sleep won’t hurt me” is false.  Sleep is an easy part of the equation to control — even aiming for just 1 more hour each night will help.  Every little bit of additional sleep helps!

Challenge:

How can you arrange your schedule and priorities to ensure you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep per night?
